Hosts put title on the line against DCC tomorrow
By Sean Devers
Host Lusignan will put their Demerara Cricket Board 2nd division Hand-in-Hand 50-overs cricket title on the line when they face-off with City side DCC tomorrow in the first ever 2nd division final under lights.
The contest is scheduled to commence at 13:30hrs and this is the first time that an official Cricket Board event will be played under lights in Guyana away from the Guyana National Stadium and fans and players alike will hope that the quality of lights will be good enough for to accommodate a 50-overs contest.
While the Stadium is the only venue in Guyana with approved lighting for ‘proper’ cricket, friendly matches have been played at the tiny Banks DIH ground at Thirst Park while makeshift lights have been used at various venues in Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo to host festival cricket using the 20/20 version of the game.
The Hand-in-Hand is the oldest cricket competition presently being played in Guyana after sponsorship for the Bristol Cup National one-day competition came to an end in the early 1990s.
Night cricket produces a unique atmosphere and attracts the entire family and once the lights are adequate
for a match of this level, a pulsating and enjoyable evening of entertainment is anticipated as Lusignan makes history by become the first club in Guyana to host an official Day/Night cricket match. The game will be played with white balls, black sightscreens and coloured clothes and while none of the preliminary round games were played with white balls, the final will gave the 2nd division players the opportunity of playing One-Day cricket as it is played at the first division and International levels.
DCC will be led by Dennis Squires and their team should include Denver Greaves and National under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun. West Indies under-19 opener Trevon Griffith will miss tomorrow’s match since he is in Essequibo representing the Rest Team against Essequibo in the GCB senior 4-day competition.
Demerara under-19 Skipper Rajendra Nickbarran, Surajpaul Deosarran and exciting Guyana under-15 left-hander Brian Sattaur should lead the East Coast team’s charge and a large crowd is anticipated.
According to the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) the sponsor want a Day/Night final but is unable to stand the cost of renting the Stadium for the match. The DCB disclosed that eight independent lights would be used for this day/night encounter and it is understood that the boundaries could be shortened to improve visibility.
More than 90 teams from the various sub-associations participated in the competition which has sponsorship in excess of $700,000.
This year, for the first time, the Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies will provide T-Shirts for players in the teams reaching the final since previously the finale was played with white clothes and red balls. The players will use their club’s coloured trousers while DCB President Bissoon Singh said that admission is free and cautioned fans to leave all weapons at home since weapons will not be allowed into the venue.
Singh, also a Vice-President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) lamented that patriotism and commitment to country seems unimportant to many young Guyanese and he said that to help instill a feeling of national pride, the National Anthem will be played before the start of tomorrow’s game while all players, managers and coaches participating in the final will receive medals for advancing past the semi-final stage.
