Jump-ball scheduled for tomorrow night
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) launched an impressive New Season yesterday afternoon that has scheduled activities until August next year with the first jump-ball tomorrow night at the Sports Hall.
The 2009/10 Season commences with a Division III and Open Knockout Competition at 7pm tomorrow night. It was disclosed that ten first division teams and 11 third division teams will compete in this competition.
In addition, the Georgetown sub-association welcomed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Melanie Patriots at the Division III level and East/West Fire as the new Division One club in the City. They will compete this season.
“There was not enough basketball in our first year in office, but this season there are not enough room or space because we have programmes to last us until August next year,” GABA President, Trevor Rose told the media.
He said that the sub-association has lined-up a super-eight tournament for Christmas and a Schools’ Championship next year, following completion of some rehabilitation work at the outdoor facility, Burnham Basketball Court.
“We want to develop the sport in the right way. Its good to see that even though we have not had enough basketball last year, we still have three new teams and a solid programme for next year,” Rose continued from his office yesterday.
He said that he has met with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and as a result, the minister has channelled the association in the right direction with their plans to develop basketball facilities in Georgetown.
“We are grateful to the National Sports Commission for giving us the facility at a reduced cost,” GABA Secretary Robert Cadogan noted about the procurement of the indoor venue for their season-opening tournament tomorrow night.
Number one ranked, Courts Pacesetters will take on bottom ranked East/West Fire in the featured Division I game tomorrow after Demerara Colours Panthers play Nets in the third division game, which is to commence at 7pm.
The winner and runner-up in the first division contest will pocket $100,000 and $50,000 respectively along with the Windjammer Trophy while the winner and runner-up in the third division event receive trophies and medals.
Lens Craft Optical, Windjammer, Facts and Roses and Hits and Jams Television (HJTV) are among the major sponsors of the event. The GABA advised all clubs to maintain the highest level of discipline throughout the competition.
