The police have released two of the six persons for whom wanted bulletins were issued last week. Shawn Benn was released on $25,000 station bail after being questioned by the police. Benn, a resident of Princes Street, Lodge, turned himself last week at the Brickdam Police Station. His lawyer Nigel Hughes said that Benn contacted him indicating that he wanted to turn himself in after seeing that he was being sought by the police.
According to the lawyer, before he left his client at the Brickdam lockups he ensured that the man had no marks of violence or bruises on his body. Hughes said that Benn has been asked to report to the station on Friday.
Another suspect Trevor Ellis was also released on station bail. He turned himself in one day after the bulletin was issued. He was accompanied by Attorney at law Donella Hawke.
Meanwhile, the police have re-issued bulletins for escapees Kurt Thierens called ‘Glasses’ or “Baige”, and Colin Jones called ‘Bunny’, who are suspects in the arson attack that destroyed the Ministry of Health building in Brickdam.
The other wanted men are Keith Ferrier, called ‘General’ and Charles Clarke called ‘Pumpkin or ‘Perkin’.
The relatives of Charles have since come forward saying that at the time of the incident he was out of the country. His mother Lorraine Clarke said that her son has been living in neighbouring French Guiana for the past year. She had explained that her son left these shores in October 2008 for Trinidad.
Mrs. Clarke had said that he only returned to Guyana because his extension had expired. She said that her son then left for French Guiana, last May. Clarke said that the now wanted man is employed as a construction worker with his cousin, Shawn Adams, the brother of Fire Chief Marlon Gentle. The police had also issued a press statement stating Clarke never left the country after his return in March.
The release indicated that checks were made at the Central Immigration and Passport Office which revealed that Clarke left Guyana on November 10, 2008 and returned to the country on March 31, 2009.
It was further stated that there are no records showing that Clarke left the country after his return.
On November 4, a gang of heavily armed men created havoc in the city. They attempted to burn down the High Court and Richard Ishmael Secondary School. The men then turned their eyes on the Brickdam Police Station and East Ruimveldt Police Outpost. Two policemen were shot when the gunmen struck at Brickdam.
