Action in the Mayor Hamilton Green 75th birthday 7-a-side football tournament continues at the Tucville (Fruta Conquerors) ground today with eight games following a brief break.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur informed that this round of matches is the second of three preliminary round games, which continue on Friday, before the knockout stage commences.
Play kicks off at 6:00pm with GFC opposing Rich Boys, while following on pitch at half an hour intervals; Santos tangle with Young Achievers, Uprising play Stewartville, Black Pearl face Seawall, Riddim Squad take on the Brazilians, GDF tackle Golden Grove, Camptown challenge Majestics and Alpha square off with Victoria Kings.
Teams will look to capitalise and win in tonights and Friday’s matches as the leaders on the points table will be inline to clash for championship honours. On offer for the top four outfits at the conclusion of the tournament is: $300,000, $100,000, $60,000 and $40,000 for the respective winner and other top-four places.
Crane, Kitty Rangers, Grove Hi Tec, Flamingo, Fruta Conquerors, Pele, Black Pearl, GFC, Uprising, Victoria Kings, Riddim Squad, Alpha and Seawall are all on three points in the standing after winning their opening matches.
Agricola, Uitvlugt, Western Tigers, YMCA, GDF and Stewartville are on one point following draws.
Houston Stars, Beavers, Majestics, the Brazilians, Santos, Rich Boys, Young Achievers, Camptown, BV Triumph and Golden Grove are still to record a point following losses.
Anthony Sancho of Kitty Rangers is the leading goal scorer with three. Locked on two apiece are several players with the ability to find the back of the net regularly and could all take the highest scorer prize. Among them are Clement Brown (Seawall), Shawn Bishop (Alpha), Omali Nassy (Uprising), Peter Parks (GFC) and Randy King (Golden Grove).
Meanwhile, Coordinator Lennox Arthur received five footballs from the Hope and Future organisation based in England. Their Guyanese representative Terrence Haynes and Chairman Joslyn Dolphin handed over the balls today.
The organisation, a non profit group, assist churches, youth groups, small clubs with equipment and gear in their target of helping in the development of youths. They have in the past donated computers and educational material to several entities around the country.
This year they have acquired about $5M in sports gear and have been assisting various clubs and church and other groups. The Hope and Future Org. also recently provided a few overseas coaches in football and cricket to help improve the technical ability of several target groups.
During this recent visit the coaches came into contact with Guyanese football, visiting the opening night of the Mayor’s birthday tourney. They agreed on request to donate the footballs to the event.
