While the Ministry of Health is expecting the H1N1 vaccine to arrive in the country in a few days, there will be no distribution until December. This is according to Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who noted that Guyana happens to be a very lucky country in the sense that it does not have an avalanche of H1N1 cases.
At present, the United States has recorded a total of 4,000 deaths for this year.
“The number of deaths has exceeded people’s expectations throughout the world and I’m hoping that we would escape this,” Minister Ramsammy said.
When the vaccines arrive in the country, it would firstly be distributed to children under 5 years of age, pregnant women, people with asthma and health workers. However, Minister Ramsammy noted that a number of groups are lobbying to be vaccinated first. The Health Ministry was in an active arrangement with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Revolving Fund in order to procure the vaccine.
Minister Ramsammy explained that the Caribbean, Central America and South America, depending on whether there will be one dose or two doses will probably need between 400 and 500 million doses of the vaccine if they are going to vaccinate the entire population.
He added that if one dose is used and only certain groups are vaccinated, then only 250 million doses will be needed.
Fortunately because of solidarity among the countries and the relationship that Guyana shares PAHO/WHO and the Revolving Fund, the Ministry of Health is in active arrangement with them to procure the 200 million vaccines.
