Dear Editor,
I saw recently in the media that Minister of Tourism has coined a new word.
I was even more dismayed to read that officials of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana had endorsed the insipid word “STAYCATION”.
This is a non-word that only shows the intellectual impoverishment of the ruling class. It is confirmation of the appalling mediocrity that has taken over Guyana in the last two decades.
Government is comfortable with this semi-illiteracy in every corner of the country; unqualified persons posing at experts; semi-illiterate persons with bad pronunciation and grammar trying to make an impression on television and such like.
It would have been better for the Minister to invite Guyanese to submit suggestions for a new concept to boost tourism than for him to do the unpardonable, i.e. murder and degrade the English Language. As it is, he is not very fluent in it himself, mostly stammering and stuttering and always looking up to the heavens for help.
We need leaders who have vision, instead of cronies just marking time while we slide further into more rot and decay.
