Former West Indies youth batsman Rajendra Chandrika hit a maiden county century for Demerara while Guyana and Berbice leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo grabbed 6-74 to share the first day honours in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) final round senior 4-day cricket match at Everest yesterday.
The 20-year-old Chandrika, who played 5 Regional One-Day games for Guyana last year, hit 10 fours in an even ton from 161 balls and 222 minutes as Demerara slipped from 175-3 to 248 all out. By the close Berbice had reached 29-0 in 5 overs with Delbert Hicks (17) and Artley Bailey (10) the not out batsmen.
West Indies ‘A’ pacer Brendon Bess removed Krishna Deosarran (7) and former West Indies youth team Skipper Steven Jacobs (5) to leave Demerara on 56-2 on a flat track in sultry conditions before the stylish Chandrika, who timed the ball sweetly and Gajanand Singh (39) took the score to 151. The left-handed Singh, a former West Indies youth player, edged West Indies ODI off-spinner Royston Crandon to slip.
The 24-year-old Bishoo who has 47 wickets from 12 First-Class matches, then bowled Chandrika at 175-4 and trapped Chris Barnwell (11) leg before as Demerara slipped to 189-5.
First-Class left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul removed Joseph Perry (5) while Bishoo, who bowled 30.5 overs, removed Troy Gonsalves (3) at 207-7.
Although West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson was far from his fluent best, the 22-year-old, with 6 fifties from 20 First-Class matches and one from 3 ODIs, worked really hard yesterday in his 147-minutes and 113-ball 44 before he drove Bishoo to mid-off just when he seemed set for a solid 50 to leave Demerara on 240-8.
Johnson has struggled for form recently and while a six over long-on as he danced into Permaul reminded the small crowd of his natural talent, his innings was more dogged than entertaining and showed ability to bat sensibly and demonstrate plenty of mental strength at a time in his career when the runs are not coming as he would like.
His demise was quickly followed by the wickets of debutant Andre Stoll and Damien Vantull for ducks as Bishoo wrapped up the innings in one over.
Bess supported with 2-41 for Berbice who only need to avoid an outright defeat to win the title.
In the other game at the Anna Regina ground in Region 2, Essequibo fell for 226 after surprisingly leaving out their leading fast bowler and former Captain Trevon Garraway from their starting X1 as politics and power struggles continue to plague Essequibo’s cricket.
Keno Baksh top scored with 64, while former Guyana under-19 Vice-Captain Royston Alkins (43), Jason Heyliger (31) and Skipper Norman Fredericks (30) all failed to build on good starts.
Guyana player Deon Ferrier took 3-17 from 17 overs of tight off-spin while former National youth player Kellon Carmichael had 2-44 for the Rest Team who reached 47-2 by the close with Guyana youth pacer Rensford Beaton removing former Test opener Ryan Ramdass (5) and Trevor Benn getting rid of night watchman Carmichael (3).
The inform GCC pair of Waslim Haslim (20*) and Vishal Singh (9) are the not out batsmen with their team needing another 180 for first innings points.
Second day action in both matches is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs today.
