One week after this newspaper reported that the Health Centre at Versailles, West Bank Demerara, was unoccupied because of the lack of electricity, the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) connected power to the building.
The move by the power company has since paved the way for the commencement of cleaning efforts by workers attached to the Region Three Administration.
It was disclosed that the facility is likely to become operational before the end of the week.
When this newspaper visited the facility yesterday, workmen employed by the Region Three Administration were seen cutting overgrowth in the compound. They said that they started work a few days ago and expect to have the compound cleared within another few days.
Also yesterday, items of furniture that were stored at the West Demerara Regional Hospital were transferred to the Health Centre. It was related that the inside of the facility was cleaned last week in preparation for its utilisation.
This newspaper understands that the building is intended to accommodate the Goed Fortuin Health Centre which has operated at a satellite location for a number of years.
The building, this newspaper understands, was constructed about four years ago but it was only last year that GPL was paid to provide electricity.
Regional Chairman, Julius Faerber, had disclosed that the building was not fully completed in 2005 as there was a problem with the contractor. He said that the project had to be re-tendered and was fully completed last year, the same year that GPL was paid to electrify the building to no avail.
Kaieteur News was informed that even the Minister of Health had appealed to the power company to provide the crucial service.
Faerber said, last week, that as soon as electricity is made available to the facility it would become operational.
