Newly crowned North American Boxing Association bantamweight champion, Leon Moore left Guyana last Wednesday for Bangkok, Thailand for a three months training stint in the Asian country?.
He is accompanied by his manager, Carwyn Holland and coach Lennox Daniels but while the latter two will remain in Thailand for the three months, Holland returns early next month to begin preparations for a Boxing Day card dubbed, ‘Season’s Beatings.’ During Holland’s absence, head of the People’s Syndicate Promotions, Keith Bazilio will assist in the preparations of the card.
Meanwhile, Moore stopped over in Trinidad and Tobago for three days before traveling over to Sao Paulo, Brazil for another few days. During his brief visit to that country he visited several sites including an all purpose gym in Sao Paulo. He also paid a courtesy call to the Brazilian City Mayor’s office. The team then continued their travels to Dubai, and subsequently, Singapore.
While in Thailand, team Moore will engage in several promotional activities among them, an interview with ESPN and HBO Asia. He will open training camp at the KO Entertainment Gym, Bangkok, Thailand sometime this week.
Meanwhile, Holland intimated that Guyana’s most feared boxer, Mitchell Rogers will be a main attraction on the Boxing Day card. He will be matched against an overseas opponent to be named shortly. Several other bouts will be added to make ‘Season’s Beatings’ a truly memorial event.
Holland has been credited for being the first boxing promoter to stage a world title fight on local soil following the World International Boxing Association (WIBA) light/heavyweight title clash between Kathy Rivers and Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil. In that fight, O’Neil defied the odds and came out victorious after pounding the American into submission.
Holland further augmented his standing as the top local promoter when he recently organized the ‘Caribbean Fury’ world title fight between Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred and Corrine van Ryck DeGroot at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. That card witnessed a return of the many fans to the boxing arena.
