Marketing & Public Relations Consultant of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento speaking with members of the Business Community sometime ago said that Guyana’s attendance at the North American & Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) tournament could be crucial for the spread of the game here. Nascimento at the time was imploring on those members to support the team’s preparations and travel to the tournament which was being held in Mexico where the winner automatically qualifies to represent the Caribbean at the World Sevens Series in Las Vegas, USA, CAC Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
Well, those guys have done all that and it is now left to be seen what level of support will be offered from the Government and Private Sector, especially those who’ve not been too eager in the past to pledge their support.
These players have delivered, not for the first, second and third time, but four times consecutively and could truly say they are the most dominant Sevens team in the Caribbean.
They have swept all before them and have become somewhat of a dynasty and should be celebrated in a manner that is appropriate for champions.
They should be paraded throughout the length and breath of this nation since their performances and achievements are unrivalled in team sports here, more resembling that of the 1970’s and 80’s West Indies teams or the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers dynasties.
A sport still struggling for mainstream attention and substantial sponsorship, the accomplishments have been many, both locally and regionally and all Guyana should feel extremely proud.
No where else would a sporting team earn those achievements and not be fully decorated and it would be interesting to see what kinds of rewards are forthcoming when the teams return.
They totally dominated the opposition as they’ve done in the past and full credit must go to first the players who’ve displayed the commitment and dedication to remain champions, while the coaching staff must also come in for special praise.
The Union, though, must improve its performance if Guyana is to make it to the next level since all facets of the sport (administration, coaching, officiating and marketing) are critical for its advancement.
The slips that were made prior to the teams’ departure are unpardonable and should not be made in the future.
The administrative arm must gear itself to perform at a higher level just as the players are doing because next year is already shaping up to be a busy one for them.
With Guyana slated to host the rugby segment of the CAC Games, it will be imperative for the Union to attain the organisational competence associated with the hosting of international events.
Just in case you forgot, the Union and the Men’s team are the current Sports Association and Sports Team of the Year.
And two years in a row, let’s now leave out the ladies, they have grown in leaps and bounds and must not be taken for granted. They have truly represented and done country proud. They all need our unwavering support and adulation.
