Says he struggled against hilly terrain
National senior distance athlete, Lionel D’Andrade had finished outside the prizes in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States’ (OECS) Half Marathon in St. Vincent and the Grenadines Sunday afternoon after winging out Saturday.
D’Andrade, who represented Guyana in the race, ran 1:25.00 to place sixth that was not among the prizes in the 13-plus mile event. The OECS awarded the top five finishers in the race that St. Lucia Zephynius Joseph won in 1:14.00. Another St. Lucian, Victor Ledger placed second with 1:15.00 as Trinidad and Tobago’s Curtis Cox rounded off the top three in 1:16.00. St Vincent’s Pamenos Ballantyne was fourth in 1:17.00 with Trinidad’s Jude LaRode fifth in 1:20.00.
The Trinidad-based D’Andrade told Kaieteur Sport that even though he had preparations in tact leading up to the event, he struggled on the hilly course of the race. He said he was surprised by the conditions of the competition.
“I struggled with the hills. There was a lot of them; too much for me to handle, I am not feeling anyway with my place in the race. The only person I never beat there was Joseph so I am not digging anything with that,” D’Andrade said.
The distance athlete indicated that he will compete in a Cross Country in Trinidad on the golf course Sunday before taking a break and returning at a marathon in January. He was identified as Guyana’s best prospect for the OECS race.
