Dear Editor,
Recently the President of Guyana Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo passed a decree that all taxis must have one colour.
This is indeed an excellent idea that will impact positively on the travelling public. Persons will be able to spot taxis from a distance and this move should help the police to finally identify those private cars that work as taxis on our streets and take the necessary actions against them.
Thanks to the President, there is going to be a standard colour for taxis, but what about the fares? Will the President sanction on the fares taxi drivers charge. Too often citizens find that there are serious inconsistencies with regard to taxi fares.
It would be good if the President, as he is dealing with the issue of colour, can also ensure that taxis soon carry meters that all begin with a standard fare and calculate the rest of the fare for a ride by distance and time. This certainly will ensure that no one is overcharged based on the whims and fancies of taxi drivers.
Guyana does not have a Road and Transport Authority (RTA) that deals with public transportation. This might be because most of our Public Transportation is privately owned.
Moreover, our Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) seems to have become more focused on water transport and the Harbour Bridge. But maybe the President might want to set up a (RTA) to deal with such issues so that he can pay attention to national matters of more serious importance.
