Ulric Harris returned to the winners’ row with a bang when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged a tournament sponsored by the Auto Tech Car Rental Service, in the pavilion of the Everest Cricket Club Eveleary, yesterday morning.
The old master compiled five games with a positive spread of 269 to nose ahead of James Krakowsky (5 games and a positive spread of 202) and Colin Chichester (4 games and a positive spread of 349), who finished in second and third places, respectively. For his efforts, Harris won the Auto Tech Car Rental Service trophy and the prestige that accompanied the win.
Harris was all business from the very first game when he defeated Floyd Carmichael (73) before eking out a close decision over Nicholas Grant (12). RO Michael was his post lunch victim, losing by a spread of 51.
He trudged off to lunch on three games and a positive spread of 134. His closet rivals then were Krakowsky (two games and a positive spread of 14) and Chichester (three games and a positive spread of 351).
Upon resumption, Chichester dropped two games to Harris (72) and Leon Belony (40) before regaining some footing with a win over RO Michael (110).
Krakowsky had a flawless second session, winning all three of his games to Kamta Ramnarine (37), Maurice Munroe (131) and eventually, Harris (17). His resurgent effort was just not enough and he had to be content with second place.
Meanwhile, national champion, Abigail McDonald leaves Guyana on Thursday November 19 next to attend the World Scrabble Championships in Malaysia. While she did not compete in yesterday’s championships, she did find the time to observe the proceedings.
Shortly after the conclusion of the prize giving activities, President of GASP, Moen Gafoor took the opportunity to wish he good luck on her expedition.
He reminded her that she will be representing the entire country and assured her of the support of all of the members. “Good luck and bring back the honours,” he implored.
The World Scrabble Championships gets underway on Thursday November 26 and attracts top class competition from among 114 of the world’s best players as compared to 104 participants last year.
Former National Champion, Fred Collins represented this country at the last year’s championships in Mumbai, India but despite chalking up a few games, was unable to win the ultimate prize.
Several other Caribbean countries would be sending representatives to the tournament. To date, Trinidadian, Leslie Charles has secured a 47
th
spot in the 2001 championships, the best by any Caribbean national. McDonald said that she has been engaged in intense training sessions and has vowed to play hard in her attempt to bring back the top prize.
