– West Dem. gets new Commander, Merai heads to Berbice
In the wake of the shocking revelations of the torture of a 14-year old boy at Vreed-en- Hoop, the Guyana Police Force has effected changes to its high command with Divisional Commander Paulette Morrison being relieved of her duties on the West Demerara.
Morrison, who has now been posted to the Department of Development at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary is being replaced by Senior Superintendent Colin West who previously headed the Tactical Services Unit.
The move comes a mere two weeks after the torture of the 14-year old boy during the police investigations into the murder of former Region Three Vice Chairman Ramnauth Bisram.
And it is being seen as a form of action against Assistant Commissioner Morrison who was in command of the division at the time of the incident.
Shortly after the news of the torture broke out Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee indicated at a press conference that he was seeking the interdiction of the Divisional Commander.
There were reports that the senior officer did not take appropriate action to safeguard the wellbeing of the tortured prisoner.
Rohee said that in light of the incident he had discussed a certain course of action with Commissioner of Police Henry Greene.
“I can’t say whether the Commissioner of Police has taken action but I’ve given general and specific directions to the Commissioner of my wishes and what should happen in that Division,” the Home Affairs Minister had told the media.
The tortured teenager has been discharged from hospital where he was taken, three days after the burns were inflicted by detectives who were interrogating him.
Although two ranks have been placed before the courts on a related matter, there have been no charges for inflicting the wounds on the teenager.
Police say they are awaiting the identification by the injured teen of the ranks involved.
In addition to the change on the West Demerara, the Commissioner of Police has announced changes in two other divisions.
Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brumell who previously headed the ‘A’ Division (Georgetown) has been relocated to the Office of the Assistant Commissioner ‘Operations’, at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
His place will be taken by Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis who was the Commander of the Police Berbice Division.
Vyphuis’ place as Commander in Berbice is now being filled by Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai, who previously worked in the Police Department of Development.
