Defending Champions Pele FC led by Guyana’s first MLS player, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson will oppose Santos FC in the feature game of the opening double header when the 20th Annual Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) Football tournament kicks off on Sunday December 13th at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The fixtures, tournament rules and instructions were handed out to the teams yesterday at the team briefing which was held at the Canteen of long time sponsors, the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company.
Facing off in the opening game which will precede the march past and official opening will be two-time champs and four-time finalists Milerock and East Banks Grove Hi Tec. These two teams will be battling for a place in the group of 16.
Milerock also hold the distinction of being the team to win this prestigious competition when they defeated fellow Linden side, eagles United in the 1990/91 final at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The teams attending yesterday’s important meeting were taken through the tournament rules and were informed of all the plans that are in place to make the tournament a success. Team representatives were given the opportunity to pose questions to the organisers to clear up any doubts they might have had on any rule or issue.
Each team will be allowed four loan players as part of their 22 man squad for the tournament.
The organisers stressed the need for team representatives to ensure that the tournament booklet which encompasses the rules, instructions and other important tournament details must be shared with all the players and officials.
A total of twenty teams will compete in this year’s tournament which will have as special guest of honour Edison Arantes do Nascimento – King Pele of Brazil, the greatest footballer the world has ever seen.
There will be ten (10) playing days for the tournament with games being played at five (5) venues, National Stadium, Georgetown Football Club ground, Enmore Community Centre ground, Mackenzie Sports Club ground and Blairmont Community Centre ground.
K&S Director Kashif Muhammad who chaired yesterday’s briefing, took the time out to inform teams of the organisation’s concern about violence at games. “This kind of unwanted behavior has no place in football and we will be very strict with anyone, player, spectator or administrator who is found wanting in this regard.
We have a very high standard to uphold and maintain and will leave no stones unturned to maintain this tradition.”
All the clubs present with the exception of Alpha United, BK International Western Tigers and Seawall FC were in support of Muhammad’s call for a clean and smooth tournament as they pledged their support to ensure that that is achieved.
Also present at yesterday’s briefing was GT&T Marketing Officer Phaedra Cramer-Phillips who complimented the K&S Organisation on achieving 20 years of dedicated service to the sports industry in the form of football.
Cramer-Phillips informed the gathering that GT&T has been on board with the tournament for 10 of the 20 years and will continue to be associated.
“We see our role as part of sports and its development of the youth in Guyana and this is something we will carry on doing. We do support other sports and other activities that help in developing and nation building.”
The teams invited to be a part of the tournament were all congratulated by Cramer-Phillips who wished them all the best.
