Digicel CEO Gregory Dean tees off a shot to signal the start of competition yesterday, at the Lusignan Golf Course.
Blessed with perfect sunshine and very fast putting greens, Brian Hackett with a gross 88 and a net 64 from a 24 handicap took the lead after the first day of competition in the Digicel Classic 2009 Golf Tournament which is being played at the Lusignan Course.
Hackett led Lakram Ramsundar, who finished with a net 66 and the two will begin today as firm favourites to win the inaugural trophy.
Other impressive performances came from Munaff Arjune, who recorded the best score of the day, ending with a gross 75 and a net 67 after starting with an 8 handicap.
Nearest to the pin was William Walker.
The tournament attracted a total of 52 players which according to Club Captain Jerome Khan is a large field comprising golfers from overseas who will be competing in this weekend’s Guyana Open.
Among the players entered were Canadian High Commissioner Francois Montour, overseas-based Salim Rashid, Carlos Adams, Ian Gouveia, Colin Ming, Mel Sankies and female Christine Sukhram.
Khan speaking on behalf of the club welcomed the presence of Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean and his hard working staff, adding that they look forward to a long lasting relationship with the sponsor.
