– injured Butts to be flown home
GUYANA Men’s and Women’s national seven’s team played unbeaten on the first day of the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association(NACRA 7’s Championships) in Mexico City yesterday.
Guyana’s Men’s team in Group A of the opening day together with Bahamas,
Cayman Islands, Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic showed why they are
favourites going into the championships defeating Guadeloupe 54-7.
In the second game the Guyanese put away the Cayman Islands 21-7 and overcame The Bahamas 26-12 in their 3rd game and concluded the day by defeating the Dominican Republic 35-7.
Guyana will take on Bermuda today in the first of the quarter finals. Bermuda placed 3rd in Group C behind Martinique who won their group.
The Bahamas will confront Jamaica in the second Quarter Final and Trinidad & Tobago will play Guadeloupe in the 3rd of the Quarter Finals, with host team, Mexico, up against Martinique in the 4th Quarter Final.
Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago Men’s teams were the only teams playing undefeated, going into the Quarter finals.
Guyana’s Women also showed their championship form, overcoming St. Lucia 10 – 7 in their first game and handily defeated Cayman Islands 26-0 in their second encounter, annihilating The Bahamas 50-0 in their 3rd game and putting away host nation Mexico 33-5 in their final game of the day.
The five women’s teams will play a second round against each other today and judging by yesterday’s result, it seems almost certain that Guyana will retain their Caribbean title.
Guyana’s Men’s team suffered the loss of their West Indies Captain, Claudius Butts, who was unable to play as a result of developing an abscess on his knee from a blow during practice and is being flown home today for medical attention.
However, senior players in Theodore Henry and Kevin McKenzie have risen to the occasion and have been leading the side from the front in the absence of their fleet-footed captain. Several other players are also reported to have lifted their game as the Guyanese sent out an ominous message that they will not surrender their title.
