Dear Editor,
I am not a person who only highlights the negatives and things that go wrong. Though the negatives and “bad” things outweigh the good, it is always necessary to bring any good to light.
And I have used (many would think that I have abused) these columns to highlight the bad.
The blackouts of Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) have probably been a topic I have written on more than any other.
But something which hasn’t happened for about over a year has taken place — is taking place. A few portions of East Berbice have not had a power blackout for over eight days. I can safely speak for the area in which I live. Something finally has to be going right in the power supply in East Berbice. November 5 came and gone; this was the day GPL was pushing in the media as to when the electricity supply in Georgetown would improve. From all indications, it has not.
Berbicians are enjoying a reliable supply for the moment. I know it wouldn’t last. It just seems too good to be true. The winds will change in a bit. But for now we shall enjoy the uninterrupted power supply, eight days and counting. It is during times like these when the power company is finally fulfilling its mandate to its customers.
Let’s see how long GPL can push power to its East Berbice customers without a break.
So I am not complaining about GPL this time. I just hope our friends in Georgetown can get some ease shortly. But for once, my Berbice blackout counter has been stuck at a very large figure for over a week now. Christmas has certainly come early.
