DEAR EDITOR,
Let me start by saying that I like the Venezuelan people. I perceive them to be similar to the Guyanese people — friendly and hospitable. Therefore, I have no grouse with them. However, the same cannot be said for their Leader — the “little” dictator (I call him that).
Have you ever noticed how many Leaders/Dictators of various countries are rather short men? To mention some of them: First and foremost (and a long time ago) Napoleon Bonaparte of France, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Kim Jung II of North Korea, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, etc.
Now there are fairly tall Dictators and we know at least two of them; but generally speaking they tend to be short and unattractive. Therefore, being a Dictator appeals to their insecure nature — they create Constitutions that give them full autonomy and carte blanche over and above everyone and everything in their own country, and this sometimes extends to other territories which have nothing whatsoever to do with them. They behave like tyrants.
With regard to Venezuela, as you all know, Venezuela and Colombia are fairly small countries in comparison to Brazil, which is by far the largest country on the South American continent, and is causing Guyana no trouble at all. Venezuela is next to Guyana on the western side, while Brazil is to the South of Guyana. The fact is that they are both practically adjoining Guyana.
Now, the little Dictator with his oil money, recently purchased lots of expensive and deadly “toys” from Russia for the ‘protection’ of Venezuela.
Suddenly, because the United States has been given permission by the Government of Colombia to have a base there to assist Colombia in fighting the drug cartels, the little Dictator who does not like the US, is acting like a child who wants to try out his new “toys” and is threatening to start a war against Colombia for permitting the US base to be on Colombia’s soil.
At this point I would remind the Guyana Administration that we do not have any “expensive toys” like Venezuela.
As a matter of fact, we have an Army (which so far seems only fit to attack its own people).
We do not have a Navy, a fleet of warships, nor fighter jets. However, we do have a song by our own Dave Martins which says “we are a
peaceful people, we don’t want no trouble…..we ain’t giving up no mountain, we ain’t giving up no tree, we ain’t giving up no river dat belong to we……. not one currass, not a blade of grass” And remember, that song refers to the Guyana/Venezuela issue.
So even though we can continue normal trading with Venezuela and our other South American neighbours, we must remember to avoid “wrapping up” too close with that particular neighbour and we must also remind our Government that “fools rush in, where angels fear to tread”.
Don’t be foolish. Remember our sadly lacking “defence” — bear that in mind.
As it stands now, the song by Dave Martins is our only method of defence against “outside forces”!!
