Police in Berbice have intensified the hunt for two men who were part of a three-man gang that allegedly abducted and raped a 15- year- old New Amsterdam Multilateral School student.
The incident is alleged to have been committed on Monday around 19:00 hours at New Street, Cumberland Village, East Canje, not far from the teenager’s home.
According to reports, the girl was on her way home when she was approached by the three men who are from the same area and are known to her. The men were reportedly under the influence of alcohol. Kaieteur News understands that one of the perpetrators covered the girl’s mouth with his hands before dragging her into the yard of an abandoned house in a secluded area. The three men then took turns raping her. The matter was exposed when the teenager’s mother decided to go in search of her after it grew late and the girl did not return home.
Acting on information, the woman went to a bushy area and found one of the perpetrators in the act.
One of the culprits, who was on the look out and had the victim’s clothes in his hand had no time to inform his other colleagues and made a dash.
His two companions including the naked one also made a dash into the bushes.
The matter was reported and police investigating the incident found two used condoms near the scene.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the perpetrators had returned to the victim’s house the next day to inquire about what he heard had happened to her the night before.
He was promptly arrested by the teen’s stepfather who is a security officer, and was subsequently handed over to the police.
His two accomplices have since disappeared and reports are that they have gone into hiding up the Canje River area, where one of them has a farm.
