Twenty-year-old Brian Blackman, a miner of 428 Block 22 Linden, was shot twice while plying his trade at the Rat’s Mining Firm in the Blackwater Backdam, an area close to Bartica.
The circumstance under which the man was shot is still not clear, but it has been confirmed that the youth was shot in his right thigh and wrist with a .32 pistol and is under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to a police source from Bartica, the man was shot some time around 14:30 hours on Thursday. However, the youth was only transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday afternoon.
The man told police that he found the gun and was playing with it when he was shot.
However, the police are not buying his story since he is right handed and was shot in the right thigh and the right wrist.
Police believe that the youth was shot by one of his colleagues for reasons unknown and that he is withholding information. When the youth was told that the weapon in question was unlicensed and that he will be charged he said that the weapon belongs to the General Manager of the camp.
The camp is believed to have a cache of arms both licenced and unlicenced. Police have since been dispatched into the area to conduct investigations.
Kaieteur News has learnt that ranks have since hauled in the General Manager and the owner of the camp for questioning. It is not clear if the men were arrested or just questioned.
