– Semi-finals on at Stadium tomorrow
By Franklin Wilson
Georgetown teams continues to exhibit their dominance in Guyana with three of the four teams in the semi-finals of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) inaugural National Super League sponsored by FIFA under their Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF project.
Headlining the city’s bid in the final straight of the tournament is the most successful local club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, Sunburst Camptown and the Guyana Defence Force with Upper Demerara’s Milerock the other team harbouring thoughts of spoiling the city’s march to the championship.
The Guyana National Stadium, Providence is the venue for tomorrow’s final four clashes. Alpha, four-time Cellink Super League Champions in the city and the only unbeaten team in the National League to date ending the preliminary round with 6 wins from 9 games with 3 draws, come up against Milerock in the first semi-final. Milerock posted 4 wins from their matches losing 3 times while drawing twice.
Milerock, like Alpha, are the champion teams in their respective associations and while the city side will start the game as odds on favorites to advance, the Linden side will have other ideas.
The Alpha line up looks very solid on paper with ‘Golden Jaguar’ Howard Lowe at the helm. The other members of their defence quartet are Kelvin McKenzie, Abassi McPherson and Quincy Madramootoo and they will be complimented by National Goalkeeper Ronson Williams who has been on a roll, collecting best goalie awards in the Cellink Premier League and the inaugural Suriname Independence Cup tournament where Guyana created history when they won their first senior International Tournament success.
Cellink MVP Shawn Bishop will lead the midfield. Back in the mix are Dwight Peters and Edison Gomes following injuries, they will join forces with Quincy Madramootoo, Dwain Jacobs, Anthony Harding, Andrew Murray, Gordon Henry and Kelvin Smith.
Milerock are not happy with their 2-0 loss and are aiming to turn the tables tomorrow. The players charged with the responsibility is their Captain Marlon Maxius, Derrol Dainty, Keiven Sullivan, Trevor Tudor, Randy Jerome, Deon Grandison, Jermaine Mc Bean, Ray Bobb-Semple and custodian Michael Rose.
Sunburst Camptown have got the better of their Army counterparts in previous encounters including the preliminary round game in this competition 2-0. Both teams have expressed confidence in moving into the final but only time will tell.
The GDF closed out the first phase of this one round tournament with 17 points accumulated from their 5 wins and 2 draws along with 2 defeats while Camptown tallied 15 points from 4 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses. Veteran Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod will spearhead Camptown, who will start the encounter with the psychological advantage in their quest for a final spot with able support coming from Orlando ‘Cracker’ Gilgeous, Nigel Codrington, Telson McKinnon, Reshawn Sandiford, Kwame La Fleur, Lance Rolston, Bevon Mosley and Richie Richards in goal. GDF will look to successful ‘Golden Jaguar’ Warren Gilkes and Marlon Benjamin to carry their challenge with backing from Delon Young in goal, Kevin Lewis, Hubert Pedro, Stellon David, Eusi Phillips, Keon Adams and Royan Morrison.
