Parents and teachers of St. Ignatius Primary School block the gate of the school during the protest.
Disgruntled teachers and parents of the St. Ignatius Primary School in Region Nine staged a protest outside the school’s compound on Friday last.
The protest was to express their growth of disappointment on several issues affecting the school. The school has little or no access to potable water. The teachers and parents also complained that shabby work has been done on the school. The sanitation aspect of the school is very deplorable.
The headmistress, Gwen Phillips, claims that she has addressed the issues at hand several times in the past to the Ministry of Education and the regional Democratic Council by means of letters.
As a result of no assistance, the Parent Teachers Association of the school planned the protest. The protest reportedly had parents blocking the entrance to prevent students from entering the school.
Phillips stated that the school has 204 students and five teachers. She said that serious thoughts of expansion should be considered.
According to sources, a senior officer attached to the Ministry in the area stated that he sympathises with the school on the situation at hand but claims he is unable to assist at this time.
However, several Non Governmental Organisations have pitched in to assist the school in any possible way. The Red Cross Society has assisted by supplying potable water to the school.
