The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) staged its first ever “Day for Veterans” yesterday. Wreaths were laid in honour of the ‘departed’ military personnel who served in British Guiana and in Guyana.
The event was graced by the various heads of the Discipline Forces and special invitees. There were surviving veterans, among them Ret’d Col. Carl Morgan; Brigadier David Granger, members of the Guyana Legion and the Benevolent Association.
The “Day for Veterans” will now be an annual event to honour all brave and fallen soldiers on the second Friday in November.
According to Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best, some have died and lived with various stories of their experiences in the Military. They will be honoured upon the special Day for Veterans.
Those who served and prevented combat must also be remembered for their great contributions to the development of our country.
The Military is the fighting force that deals with the rise of new threats and combat, where strength and resilience are displayed and positive solutions are created.
According to Ret’d Col. Morgan, supreme sacrifices were made by the veterans and hopefully next year the Wall of Remembrance will be created to display various historical aspects of the army.
The programme opened with the Last Post, and continued with two minutes of silence.
There were prayers by representatives of the three major religions in Guyana, hymn singing and Scripture readings.
The monument at which the wreaths were laid was commissioned on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the army by President Bharrat Jagdeo.
It had been constructed by the Veterans Association which recognised that there was already a monument for fallen soldiers but thought it fitting to have one for local soldiers.
