Morgan ‘upset’ over non-selection
By Edison Jefford
Winner of the First and Second Stages of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American 10km Road Race, Cleveland Forde departed Guyana yesterday to run in the Third Stage of the race in Panama tomorrow.
Kaieteur Sport understands that Forde left Guyana with Robert Chisholm as his Manager and his Coach yesterday morning. An official from the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Cornel Rose confirmed Forde’s departure for the race.
Rose had told this newspaper last week that the Athletics Association of Guyana was aiming to send Alika Morgan and Forde to Panama. However, Morgan’s coach and manager, Leslie Black said that he understands that the AAG never selected Morgan.
Black noted that that was indicated in the minutes of the AAG’s November council meeting. He questioned why the national distance athlete was not selected or even asked to raise her own fare to attend the meet after placing second at the first two.
“I feel bad about what the AAG did. They didn’t call me to tell me anything but they called Cleveland. They never informed me about what was going on. They could have let me know that I had to find my money,” a disappointed Morgan said.
“They (the AAG) could have send Chisholm but they could not send me. I feel like Chisholm is just going there to watch Cleveland run in my place. I am upset about this because I have been in the South American race from the beginning,” she complained.
Morgan was speaking briefly to Kaieteur Sport at the Albion Community Centre Ground after a reported record-breaking performance in the Girls Open 3000m. Morgan broke Marian Burnett’s mark but was later stripped of the achievement.
The feat was announced at the Ground but the athlete was later informed that she will not get the record because the Ground was marked short. An official confirmed that he was asked to destroy the paper that documented the result since it was not valid.
Forde, who appears on billboards and other forms of advertising for telephone giants, GT&T, did not procure sponsorship from the company to compete in Panama. As a result, the local Athletics Association was forced to stand the athlete’s expenses.
Rose said that they were awaiting a word from GT&T as to whether or not they will sponsor the country’s leading distance athlete. However, that did not yield any positive results since the local athletics body was forced to dig into its financial coffers.
Forde is on a historic journey in Panama since no other athlete in the seven-year-old 10km event has ever been so close to winning all three stages of the IAAF competition. Forde won in Guyana and Suriname in the first two stages in October.
