The Open Doors Centre at the Ministry of Health Compound Sophia (National Vocational Training Centre for Persons with Disabilities) Thursday graduated a number of specially skilled people.
Tiffany Telesford, Norris Cummings, Naomi Cyrus, Adonica Mc Donald and Amanda Rogers graduated in Information Technology; Reginald Blake, Mickel Park and Christopher Raghubansie, in Electrical Installation; Gale Archer, Rosline Barnwell, Yvonne De Abreu and Grace-Ann Scipio, in Garment Construction; and Jamal Rodney and Cleveland Williams in Carpentry/ Joinery. The Centre provided trainees with counseling, guidance and professional training, while ensuring the achievement, retention and advancement in suitable employment to improve the life conditions of persons with disabilities from a social perspective.
Guest speaker, Suresh Baijnauth, advised the graduates not to let anyone ever say that “you are disabled,” for you have graduated and evolved in your development as a person and this being one of the first steps to opening the doors of prospective employment, and this should be a motivating factor to keep training and developing yourselves to head to the University of Guyana.
The Centre will continue to accept applications for trainees to pursue training for the present batch, Establish stronger links with disability organisations and educational institutions, Establish a data base on Open Doors trainees and Revise and expand the training programme for 2011/2013, while new courses in Plumbing /Masonry and Refrigeration.
According to the best graduating trainee, Adonica Mc Donald, “I have been equipped with a skill for life and I am thankful for the opportunity to learn at the training centre.”
The Open Doors Centre is the only institution in Guyana that offers vocational training to people with disabilities.
