BK Int. Western Tigers face play Sunburst Camptown; Santos & NAU for 3rd
BK International Western Tigers will face Sunbusrt Camptown in the championship match of the 209 edition of the NAMILCO Football Festival/Knock-Out tournament organised by the Fruta Conquerors Football Club.
Both Western Tigers and Camptown brushed aside their respective opponents in respective semi final matches on Wednesday evening at the tournament venue, Tucville Community ground.
The Tigers roared to an emphatic 6-0 win over New Amsterdam United (NAU) in the feature game while Camptown eased to a comfortable 3-1 win over Santos to set up what is anticipated to be a mouth watering end to the 3rd Annual Championship, this evening.
Western, returning to ominous and consistent form after many years, outhustled the top Berbice side as they hit the network at regular intervals. The lads from the east did create quite a few scoring chances but were not able to make them count unlike the city side.
And when fans and supporters thought that their leading marksman Devon ‘The Hustler’ Millington would have been their trump card, the team showed depth with Dwayne Ali and Colin Nelson stepping up to share four goals equally among them.
Maxwell Pellew it was though, who sent the Tigers on their way with a 13th minute goal. Millington added his name to the scoring sheet two minute later as Ali made it a 3-0 game with the first of his double in the 33rd minute.
The score remained the same up until the half. New Amsterdam to their credit did enjoy a few threatening moments but the Tigers defense nullified their threats. The second half saw the Tigers making some tactical switches that reaped great rewards.
Left back and young ‘Golden Jaguar’ Colin Nelson was pushed up into the attack and answered the call of his Coach Cornel Millington with ease as his trade mark left foot shots produced two memorable goals, the first coming in the 69th minute with the second three minutes later.
Ali closed out the game with his second in the 77th minute as NAU were clearly outclassed but not disgraced as they showed that with more outings against quality opponents, they can be a force to reckon with.
Telson Mc Kinnon led Camptown to their 3-1 win over Santos, his strike partner Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington teaming up to net the other goal as the forwards did the job for their team. Santos had reduced to lead to one in the 54th minute, Glenorvan Edmonds converting from a set play just outside the box.
Santos started the encounter in a hustling mood as they sought to impose their way on the Camptown boys who did not allow that to happen.
Mc Kinnon tucked away the first goal for Camptown in the 13th minute beating goalkeeper O’Neil Heywood to his right at the near post. Before the halfway mark Mc Kinnon doubled his tally and the lead with another goal in the 39th minute.
Up to that point Camptown were looking comfortable against Santos who have already booked their passage back into the Premier League ranks after finishing second at the division one level. They {Santos}had some good moments and created numerous chances only to see them going wide of the mark.
Glenorvan Edmonds reduced the deficit by one when he skillfully put away a free kick in the 54th minute. For a moment it seemed that Camptown had lost their focus but defended their slim lead before Nigel Codrington, who again enjoyed a good game, sealed the deal with a powerful shot that beat Heywood to his right.
Codrington collected the ball on the left side of the Southern goal halfway into Santos’ half worked his way into the middle before unleashing a fierce left foot shot on the arc just outside the box. The ball went sailing past Heywood was caught by surprise as the ball settled in the nets.
An exciting final is anticipated between two sides that have always provided entertaining football for the fans. Western are on a dream run while Camptown will be aiming to maintain their consistent form as they seek to add another title to their collection ahead of the 20th Kashif & Shanghai football tournament, next month.
A win for either team will do a world of good for their confidence going into the all local Kashif and Shanghai cast.
New Amsterdam and Santos will face off in the third place game from 18:00hrs. The presentation ceremony is expected to take place after the final and executives of the National Milling Company (NAMILCO) including Managing Director Bert Sukhai, will be on hand to assist with the distribution of prizes.
