The contempt shown by the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) towards the media, supporters and the business community that poured large sums of money into its coffers to get the male and female teams to the North American & Caribbean Rugby Association Championships in Mexico is certainly not a good expression on its part.
For over two weeks now, members of the media, fans of the sport and the business community have been waiting patiently for the announcement of the two squads to represent Guyana at the NACRA Tournament over the weekend, but to date no word or release has emanated from the Union and this has to be seen as disrespectful to the rugby community and those who offer their much needed financial support to the fraternity.
Sources close to the Union had disclosed that the delay in releasing the names of the players to travel was due to the disapproval among members of the Men’s squad of a certain player who was guilty of misconduct on previous tours, but was still chosen to travel by the selection panel.
We were told that the matter is being sorted out and very shortly the teams will be released, but no word pertaining to the final composition of the teams has since been forwarded.
This particular newspaper which spends its money to provide the necessary coverage to the sport views the action taken by the GRFU as disrespectful to all concerned with the development of the sport.
Once again, the uncaring and selfish behaviour displayed by officialdom and not the athletes has managed to hurt the image of the sport, but as usual, it is the athletes who suffer and will continue to do so.
Guyana’s rugby has enjoyed enormous success at the Regional level for the past 3-4 years and even as we go to the Mexico event as defending champions in both categories, the administrators of the sport should take a page out of the book of the hard working players, who seems to be setting the example of how to become a champion.
Many areas of ineptness on display during the teams’ preparations were overlooked, but to not release the squads to this nation is unpardonable, especially when one considers that the sport is not high profile (in Guyana) and is looking for maximum publicity ahead of the scheduled hosting of the XXI Central & American Games 2010 Rugby Sevens Tournament here.
This malfunction obviously would not have escaped the attention of those three corporate entities that pledged large sums of cash for the teams travel etc.
It is not even known when the teams are slated to travel, such a big negative for such a big tournament which has at stake qualification for the top five teams for the CAC Games, while the number one Caribbean team will qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
