Soldier remanded on carnal knowledge charge

A Guyana Defence Force private was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court on a charge of carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16.
Derrick Lovell, of Supply, Mahaica, is accused of having sex with his 14-year old neighbour.
The army private was caught in the act on October 11 by the teenager’s brother who promptly reported the matter to the police.
According to reports the soldier had shown an interest in the teenager but was warned to keep away from her by her relatives.
However he refused to heed the warning and visited the girl at her home where he committed the act.
He did not cater for the girl’s brother returning home and the matter being exposed.
He was subsequently arrested and charged.
Lovell is to return to court on November 24.
