Two council members of Kabakaburi were reportedly relieved of their council duties by representatives of the Regional Democratic Council on Tuesday.
The RDC representatives reportedly went to the village without notifying the administration and relieved Adam Calistro, Secretary; and Noreen Edwards, Treasurer of their council duties, ostensibly because of political affiliation to an opposition political party.
Neville Calistro, a former Toshao, and standing elder of the village claimed that the action of removal is against the law.
According to the Amerindian Act in the laws of Guyana, such actions can only be done officially by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, he said.
He added that upon contacting the Ministry an official stated that it was only a move of replacement.
Calistro stated that as a result of the incident several council members are calling for an inquiry.
