The prisoner, who escaped the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday, made another court appearance on Tuesday to be read new charges and landed a lengthy jail term.
He was charged for escaping lawful custody and with simple larceny after he robbed someone during his escape.
Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson jailed Randy Samuels, 31, of Buxton for 18 months
On November 9 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court while being a remanded prisoner on a simple larceny charge Samuels escaped from lawful custody.
That same day while being an escaped prisoner on Water Street, Samuels stole two jeans valued at $7,000 property of Joylyn Moore.
Samuels, who appeared in court with shackles on his legs, pleaded guilty to both charges and told the magistrate he wanted to go home for Christmas and that he was not getting bail.
He added that he saw the police ‘lapsing’ and as such he struck at the moment. He also claimed that he is an Observation Ward patient and that he does things and don’t even realize what he has done.
On Monday around noon, Samuels was in the chute of Court Five when a female police constable opened the door of the chute to allow three prisoners access to the court lockups. Samuels reportedly pushed the constable at the door as she opened it and dashed for the gate of the Magistrates’ court. After making a successful escape, Samuels was reportedly recaptured in the area of the Vendors’ Arcade.
