President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday told taxi operators in Guyana that he was making it mandatory for all of them to use one colour, indicating that this move would improve the image of the country and help the security forces.
The operators have not resisted the decision and have agreed on an August ,2010 date for compliance.
Jagdeo also told operators that he would be waiving their license fee, as well as their radio transmission fees for two years. This should ease their burdens while they get their vehicles in the right colour.
A specific colour has not been decided. The decision was deferred to another meeting that a group of the operators would have with the Ministers Manniram Prasahd and Minister Clement Rohee.
Jagdeo met with the operators at the Guyana International Conference Centre on the East Coast. According to the Guyana Tourism Authority, an estimated 55 taxi services were invited to the meeting.
Jagdeo said the measure to have taxis use one standard colour was only one of the many recommendations that had gone to him to regularise taxi providers in the country.
Also, at the request of some operators, Jagdeo committed to set aside resources to educate taxi operators about Guyana, so they can easily answer questions posed by tourists. At the request of another operator, the President also committed to fund First Aid training for taxi operators so they could respond quickly in cases of accidents.
The President predicted that taxi services would see rapid growth in the future. He said that Guyana was gaining greater attention as the country push towards a low carbon economy.
The directive to operators to standardise the colour of their vehicles comes shortly after the Ministry of Tourism worked with operators to develop a code of ethics.
Taxi operators committed to treating all customers with courtesy and to be helpful, especially towards older ones, the disabled and children. They also said they would observe laws that relate to safe driving.
The code also specifies that taxi operators display their current identification and the service they work for.
