Fraser equals Under-16 record
By Edison Jefford at Albion
East Coast Demerara and national junior sprint ace, Chavez Ageday ended North Georgetown’s Triston Joseph’s 100m reign yesterday with a stunning performance in the Boys’ Under-20 race that left many enthusiasts dumbfounded at Albion. Ageday, who represented Guyana at the Junior CARIFTA Games earlier this year, had a sublime start in the final that Joseph was more favoured to win after turning in the fastest heat with a time of 10.6 seconds in the Schools’ Athletics Championships.
The national junior sprinter executed his phases well with his head pointed down the track and a technique that placed him among the medals at the 80m mark before he surged forward to outdo Joseph and New Amsterdam’s favourite, Okeme Stewart.
The 16-year-old Ageday turned in an impressive 10.7 seconds ahead of Stewart, who finished the race second in 10.9 seconds and Joseph, who registered a relatively slow 11.3. Upper Demerara’s Winston Caesar was outside the medals with 11.7 seconds.
Dellon DeAbreu, who was touted as a definite medal contender, finished sixth in 12.1 which was way below his usual standards. However, Ageday made his point clear, there is a changing of the guard and he is in control of that forward momentum.
Roxanna Rigby won a controversial Girls’ 100m ahead of Nisa Allen, who leaned at the line and seemingly outdid Rigby. New Amsterdam’s Rigby was given 12.4 seconds and Allen 12.4 in the leading 100m race while Keyandre Zephyr (13.0) was third.
New Amsterdam’s Cortez Fraser showed clear superiority in the in the Boys’ 100m Boys Under-16 race when he turned in a blistering 11.1 seconds to equal Joseph’s 2005 record that was set at the same venue. He defeated West Demerara’s Carl Tudor (11.2) and South Georgetown’s Chris Hyderkhan, who completed the sprint in 11.6 seconds.
As the night of upsets continued, North Georgetown’s Iana Graham lost the 100m Under-16 title to South Georgetown’s Tiffany Carto, who took command of the race from the start. Carto ended with 12.9 seconds while Graham clocked 13.0 seconds. New Amsterdam’s Latania Caesar was third in 13.1 seconds.
East Coast Demerara’s, Deja Smartt won the 100m Girls Under-14 contest in 12.7 while South Georgetown’s Shonnett Freeman was second in 13.0 seconds and Upper Demerara’s Khaleria Harris closely behind in 13.1 seconds.
Yohance Hendricks, representing East Georgetown won the male version in 12.4 seconds while Lloyd Witherspoon (12.6) and Osafa Profit were second and third respectively. These athletes are scheduled to compete in the 200m Heats today.
After 42 Finals, Upper Demerara/Kwakwani has a 15-point lead over Georgetown in the Track and Field Championships. Defending champions, Upper Demerara has 187 points with North on 172 points and New Amsterdam in third with 148 points.
