Additional vessel on Essequibo River aiding river transport

The efficiency of traffic on the Essequibo River has been significantly improved with the addition of another vessel to the fleet of Transport and Harbours Department.
According to the Traffic Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD), Ms Haynes, the arrival of the MV Makouria from the Berbice River has improved the services offered on the Essequibo River.
The vessel was placed there after plying the Rosignol/New Amsterdam route for a number of years.
The relocation of this vessel was made possible after the bridging of the Berbice River, bringing to an end the sometimes-long hours that motor vehicles were made to wait before crossing the Berbice River.
Ms Haynes said that the MV Makouria is now making two trips to Bartica each week.
She said that it is always packed as passengers and most importantly the transportation of goods between Bartica and Parika has significantly improved.
When the bridging of the Berbice River was first mooted, many became worried that the vessels that plied the Berbice River becoming ‘white elephants’.
Minister of Works, Robeson Benn, however assured that the vessels would have been relocated and would have augmented the work of other vessels plying the country’s waterways.
