A deportee who was on the run for 18 months after committing a murder in March 2008 was nabbed and remanded yesterday, when he made his court appearance. He claimed he was in Suriname where he resides as a construction worker.
Jermaine Conway, 34, of 2041 Hummingbird Street, South Ruimveldt, was refused bail yesterday after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to be read a charge of murder.
It is alleged that on March 3, 2008 at D’Urban Street Conway murdered his then friend, Sherwin Jansen. Conway, who was unrepresented in court, was not required to plead to the indictable charge. He stated that he was in Suriname and that was his reason for not appearing in court. He declined to say anything else when asked by the magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Kevin London stated that the accused was arrested on Tuesday at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he went to seek medical treatment for a cut on the finger. London added that through diligent work of the police he was arrested when he identified himself at the hospital.
London explained that on March 3, 2008 Conway and Jansen had an altercation over money that Conway had stolen.
Jansen received stab wounds to the elbow and shoulder and had to be taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Conway is expected to return to court December 7.
