Residents of Zeelugt, East bank Essequibo, were shocked by the lifeless body of Rajdai Persaud, floating in a trench in the community.
It was unclear who discovered the body of the 26-year-old woman, but according to the curious onlookers the woman’s body was spotted some time between 4:30 hours and 5:00 hours. Her relatives were immediately summoned. One of them left to inform the police at the Leonora Police Station.
Speculation of how the woman met her death was the talk of the onlookers, but the dead woman’s face and her legs were visible and all parts seemed to have been attacked by creatures in the water.
Rajdai lived with her mother, Dularie Persaud, who was distraught and almost speechless.
However, one of her relatives said that Rajdai left her home as usual and when she didn’t return that evening the family became worried and started to search for her.
They checked with other relatives and friends whom she normally visited, but their search was fruitless because no one had seen her for the day.
On Sunday they continued to search. They also made a report to the police station.
When the news came to them that a woman’s body was found in the trench they all rushed to see and their worst fear was confirmed.
The police have not ruled out foul play and an autopsy is expected to be performed on Wednesday to determine the cause of death.
