Riddim Squad yesterday received the championship trophy and cheque ($150,000) for emerging as champions of the inaugural Western Union Division-One football competition which was organised by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).
The East Bank based side did not only take the top place in their debut tournament but ended as the only unbeaten team after 11 matches accumulating 33 points.
Apart from the top accolades, which also included the MVP which went to Sherwin Hope and the Best Goal Keeper, Dorville Stewart, Riddim Squad has earned a place in the Premier League ranks along with the second placed Santos whose only loss in the league came at the hands of the champions.
Uprising took the third place by virtue of a superior goal average over Houston Stars after the two teams drew their final game 1-1. Santos’ Michael Pedro was the highest goal score of the competition with eight (8) goals. Black Pearl and Kitty Rangers were both named the Most Disciplined Teams. Santos pocketed $75,000 for their 2nd place while Uprising and Houston Stars received $50,000 and $25,000, respectively.
At the presentation ceremony, Grace Kennedy Remittance Services (Western Union) Marketing Manager Natheeah King expressed her company’s delight and appreciation at being associated with the competition organised and run by the GFA.
King, an ardent sports fan, also disclosed that the company has been so satisfied with the general coverage received from the media that they are going to continue sponsorship of the tournament.
“I would also like to say congrats to the teams that actually won prize monies but more so to the team that won the tournament.”
GFA President Troy Mendonca who along with his Executive has done a tremendous job in having tournament played in the City, conveyed the GFA’s gratitude to Western Union and King for partnering with his Association for a tournament that is of vital importance to the GFA.
“Your support not only provided rivalry among teams and players but it assisted in keeping youngsters involved in an organised sport that assisted in keeping them away from the many social ills that is plaguing our society and world.”
Mendonca, himself a former National Player turn Administrator, took the opportunity to join the many others who have come out in condemnation of the recent acts of violence that has beset the sport in the city.
“I would like to highlight that this is not a problem only faced by us but it is worldwide. We should all join together and continue to strive hard to eradicate such acts for the good of the game and the world.”
The GFA head also took the opportunity to encourage players and fans to support the services offered by Western Union so that in turn, they will be able to continue their support of the game and other activities.
