A post mortem examination conducted yesterday on the remains of 59-year-old Sarjudai Persaud, revealed that her heart ruptured as a result of the electric shock she sustained while trying to tighten a light bulb last Saturday.
The woman’s husband, Lalman Persaud, could not even bear to witness the post mortem himself but rather sent his son, Rubranauth Persaud, and another relative.
Still unable to come to grips with his tragic loss, the man questioned why his wife failed to wear a pair of slippers as usual before entering a chicken pen located aback of the family’s 9 Leonora Junior Staff Compound, West Coast Demerara, home.
According to Lalman Persaud, his wife would usually tend to the chickens which they rear for additional income and she knew exactly how to handle that task as she did so for more than a decade.
It was some time after 18:00 hours Saturday that Sarjudai Persaud was discovered dead near a chicken pen where she had gone to feed some chickens.
Lalman Persaud had disclosed that he first heard the news of his wife’s demise from his daughter, Kowsilla Seenanan. In fact, he noted that the news was the worse he has ever gotten on a birthday. Lalman celebrated his 52nd birthday last Saturday, a date that coincides with his wife’s death.
The man who suffers from heart complications, said that he is grateful for the strength he has been able to find through the comfort of family and friends who have been very supportive since his wife’s demise.
In 2008 Lalman Persaud underwent a double heart bypass in Barbados and has ever since tried to live life with some caution.
But although he was not prepared to deal with it, God gave him the much needed willpower to accept a call informing him that his wife was electrocuted.
According to the man who works as a taxi driver, when he got the news he sped home only to find his barefooted wife lying dead in the back of their yard. He disclosed that the area in which she was found was a bit damp.
Lalman said that he desperately tried to revive his wife of 33 years before rushing her off to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to Lalman, his daughter Kowsilla informed him that his wife had gone out to feed the chickens when she discovered that the bulb in the chicken pen was a bit slack. Seenanan, her seven-year-old son Davendra, a neighbour and her son were at home with Sarjudai Persaud at the time.
According to Lalman Persaud, he was informed that his wife had requested of her neighbour’s son to unplug a drop cord that runs from the family’s home to the chicken pen so that she could tighten the bulb.
However, as fate would have it, the lad unplugged the wrong cord, resulting in the woman being electrocuted.
It was not until some time later that the young Davendra discovered the lifeless body of his grandmother sprawled near the chicken pen. He raised an alarm and efforts were immediately made by the woman’s daughter to revive her.
Sarjudai Persaud, according to her husband, will be laid to rest tomorrow following a Hindu service at the family’s home.
