Stoll included in Demerara team
By Sean Devers
Berbice and Demerara will be without their big guns when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) 4-day cricket competition resumes today after a break for the Regional One-Day tournament which was held in Guyana.
Berbice, who beat the Rest Team in their opening game, face Essequibo at the Anna Regina ground and will be with out 4 of their key players.
Narsingh Deonarine is unavailable due to his West Indies re-call for the Australia series while the Crandon brothers (Esuan and Royston) and National Keeper Delbert Hicks are all on the injured list and will miss today’s game.
Without a win against Berbice since their 1994 success, Essequibo, the only team never to win a senior Inter County tournament in Guyana, will have their best chance of doing so against the depleted Berbice side and if they are again beaten the GCB will be asked some serious questions regarding their continued inclusion at this level and their internal cricket development.
While the Ramesh Narine led side have one of the best fast bowling attacks in the tournament with Trevon Garraway, Trevor Benn and Delon Heyliger capable of doing some damage on their day.
The spin of national under-19 left-arm spinner Anthony Adams and off-spinner Andrew Williams could also prove useful on what is anticipated to be a slow track, but with the likes of Skipper Assad Fudadin, his deputy Homchand Pooran and Test player Sewnarine Chattergoon in the Berbice line-up, Berbcie will still start as overwhelming favorites to finish on top.
Norman Fredericks is a talented player while Mahendra Boodram, Yoseshwar Lall, Heyliger and Narine will be depended on to do the bulk of the scoring.
If there is any early life in the track from the Atlantic high tide, West Indies under-19 pacer Keon Joseph and first class pacer Brendon Bess could make life difficult for the home team’s batsmen with their genuine pace while the Guyana spin pair of Veerasammy Permaul and Davendra Bishoo could befuddle batsmen not mentally equipped to consistently bat for prolonged periods.
At the Police ground in the city, Demerara, without Test players Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Travis Dowlin, come up against the Rest team and a competitive match is anticipated especially is a bit of grass is left on the pitch.
While National under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll has been included in the Demerara squad the Demerara selectors have again ignored Deon Ferrier who only last week was considered good enough to be in the National squad.
Rajendra Chandrika and Shemroy Barrington will want to give Demerara a solid foundation for Christopher Barnwell, Leon Johnson, Steven Jacobs, Gajanand Singh, Krishna Deosarran, Zaheer Mohamed and Troy Gonsalves to build on.
Players like Jacobs, Singh and Johnson will know that their place in the Guyana team for next year’s 4-day competition could depend heavily on how responsibly they bat in this competition since the Guyana training squad for next year’s first class competition should be selected this month.
Former National pacer Leon Scott should share the new ball with Barnwell while Stoll is the 3rd pacer in the side. Mohamed, left-arm spinner Damien Vantull and Gonsalves are the spinners.
If West Indies under-19 opener Trevon Griffith picks his shots and concentrate on batting ‘long’ the crowd could be entertained by one of the most talented young openers in the region while Demerara rejects like Derwin Christian, Sauid Drepaul and Ferrier will be keen to do well against their former team.
The Demerara squad read:- Rajendra Chandrika, Shemroy Barrington, Christopher Barnwell, Andre Stoll, Leon Johnson, Krishna Deosarran, Zaheer Mohamed, Gajanand Singh, Steven Jacobs, Joseph Perry, Leon Scott, Troy Gonsalves, Damian Vantull.
