Student-athletes left stranded on East Coast
By Edison Jefford
All roads lead to the Albion Community Centre Ground today for the commencement of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Ministry of Education (MOE) 49th Annual Schools’ Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships.
The first sets of events are scheduled for this morning at 6am when the males 40km Road Race and females 25km race peddles off in the cycling competition along with the 10km male and female Road Race in the Athletics contest.
Keen rivalries are expected in the first events as the16 Districts battle for supremacy and defending champions, Upper Demerara/Kwakwani look to continue their reign. It will be a closely fought battle based on the teams’ preparations.
Sports Officer of GTU, Ceon Bristol told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that preparations went well for the Districts from all reports. “Regions One, Eight and Nine are already here and they are expected to travel (to Albion) today (yesterday)”.
Those regions that Bristol identified are the three hinterland regions that usually compete in the competition. They have had problems with transportation before but Bristol related that they were confirmed with larger contingents.
However, there were some concerns last night from the student-athletes from the District Four (East Coast Demerara) that they were made to wait on the East Coast road between Buxton and Victoria on their transportation to Albion.
Kaieteur Sport received reports that the students were waiting on the road from about 10 am on their transportation that allegedly came hours after at approximately 8:30pm. The students contemplated boycotting the event at one time.
Among them was a cyclist, who is expected to compete at this morning’s event. Efforts to contact an official from the District proved futile up to press time last night. But from the reports there was certainly a hiccup with transportation.
“The LOC (Local Organising Committee) did most of what they had to do. Both schools were prepared with repairs and water. Accommodation is in good condition,” Bristol said from the GTU Sports Office around midday yesterday.
Belvedere Primary School was identified as the Games Village for the males while all the females will stay at Cropper Primary School. Swimming will be held today at the Albion Pool from 9am, following the early morning events.
“Logistics, even though some Districts had some concerns are in place. It seem as though we will have maximum participation this year,” Bristol believes, adding that the Opening Ceremony is to commence after the swimming contest.
President Bharat Jagdeo was invited to officially open the Championships while Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh and Regional Chairman for Region Six, Zulphikar Mustapha are to also address the gathering at the Opening Ceremony.
