The Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG) registered 8 wins and was eventually adjudged best gym when the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG), in association with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) staged the Berbice edition of the Inter-Gym Boxing Tournament at the at the Scott Church Ground, Main and Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam, last Saturday evening.
Thirty eight boxers competed in nineteen divisions for top honours along with an exhibition bout between two tots from the PRBG. Fly weight boxer, Kelcie George, representing the PRBG, put up a masterful display against Kelvin Wilson and was eventually adjudged the winner in this category.
The audience consisted of patrons from Berbice as well as the capitol city and those that traveled long distances to witness the card admitted that this fight was truly worth the journey. George used his skills and superior reach to get the better of Kelvin Wilson in a truly bruising contest. At the end of the night’s activities he was adjudged the best boxer. Despite this, it was the Harpy Eagles Boxing gym that eventually walked away with the honours for the best gym.
The card was well supported with Berbicians, thirsting for fistic entertainment, coming out in their hundreds to witness the event. Boxers from several city gyms participated in the night’s activities including the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Harpy Eagle (HE) and Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), two Albouystown based facilities. Some 19 bouts were contested in addition to an exhibition bout between two under-7 fighters out of the PRBG.
In other results of the night; Romeo Norville (FYF) defeated Dwaine David (GDF) in the senior category while in the 50-55 lbs category Jamal Eastman (PRBG) defeated Kevin Allicock (HE). Devon Boatswain (GDF) sporting the physique of a bodybuilder out-hustled Romeo Norville in another light/heavyweight bout to hand Norville his first loss after he (Norville) had registered a win in an earlier bout.
Julian Blair (PRBG) also got the better of Kester Allicock (HE). There were two bouts in the 70-75 division. In the first, Joel Williamson (PRBG) triumphed over Ezekiel Accra (FYF) while the second bout saw Marlon Edwards (PRBG) getting the better of Kevin Thom (HE).
Elworth France (PRBG) then defeated Travis Hubbard (HE) to walk away with the honours in the 85-89 weight class while Antoine Branch registered a TKO win over Earl Van Lewin (PRBG) after the latter boxer refused to come out for the start of the second round. Jermain Agard (FYF) was also in the winner’s row scoring a points decision over Rudolph Sancho (PRBG).
In the 110-117 division Imran Khan (HE) defeated his gym mate Devon Allicock while in the 114-118 weight class, Kiev Allicock (HE) won over Richard Williams (PRBG). Dexter Jordon (FYF) then scored a points victory over Carlton La Fleur. Action in the 119-124 weight class saw Marley Ross (PRBG) defeating Mark Anthony (HE) while Terrence Adams (HE) got the better of Pascal David (PRBG).
Orlando Allicock (FYF) then won his bantamweight contest against Edwin Richards (GDF) while Light/heavyweight Germaine Dow (FYF) won a controversial points decision over Sherwin Clarke. The patrons felt that Clarke, boxing for the first time, had done more than enough to win. Dow was the aggressor in the early stages of the bout and seemed well on his way to an easy win. However, Clarke turned up the heat in the latter part of the contest and had Dow ducking to evade the blows. The latter boxer was firstly warned and subsequently had two points deducted from his score, a decision that did not go down well the crowd. Stephen Gouveia (HE) then dominated Romano Clarke in another Light/heavyweight bout and was eventually awarded a win.
The lone female encounter saw Ancilla Norville (HE) winning by TKO in round one over Reana David after an onslaught by the former boxer forced the referee to wave the contest off. Roopnarine Rajnauth and Troy Weeks then delighted the crowd in a three round exhibition contest to bring a satisfying end to an entertaining card.
The officials for the night were referees Terrence Poole, Carl Franklin and Guyana’s lone female referee/judge, Ramona Agard.
National middleweight champion and former world rater, Howard Eastman, attended the event and assisted in the presentation of the trophies and other prizes. Several corporate bodies contributed to the successful staging of the event and included A. Ally and Sons, Future Vision and Universal DVD Club, The Candy Shop and Bar of North Road and Camp Street, Georgetown, La Caribe Diner, Stretch ‘D’ Dollar Grocery, J Printery, Bob and Sons and Blue Ridge Repairs.
Meanwhile, the tournament returns to Georgetown, at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Albouystown on Sunday December 16. This would be the final episode for the year and the organizers have promised an action packed card. As on previous cards, most of the country’s top amateur fighters would be showcasing their skills. There would also be lucrative rewards at stake.
