Region 9 cop runner-up spot after 2-all draw with Bartica
On a scorching hot day in mountainous community Lethem in hinterland Guyana, hosts Region 9 held Bartica to a 2-all draw in the final match of the National Women’s League Football tournament to finish behind inaugural champions Georgetown as Runners-up.
Urged on by a large partisan crowd, the girls from the Interior village took the lead 5 minutes into the game when a Lorian Tony ‘header’ sent the raucous fans into wild celebrations.
With both teams playing an aggressive brand of fast-paced football, the battle was pulsating and by the time the half-time whistle both teams were going at full throttle and the score read Region Nine 1, Bartica nil.
The hectic pace continued into the second half with the lasses from Region 9 doing more work than their Bartica counterparts, who had to contend with injuries to four of their players as they were forced to make some hasty substitutions.
Sharon Bamfield silenced the crowd in the 52nd minute with her equalizer but 10 minutes later the home girls were back in the lead when the talented Tony found the back of the net for the 2nd time in the match; driving inside the 18-yard box to beat the visiting Custodian.
Although not as fit looking as their opponents, the Bartica girls remained in the contest when a beautiful clip off the boot of Tenika Joseph again leveled the score line in the 66th minute.
The hyper active Dacia Hamilton played a roving forward and most of her skillful passes were ‘bang on target’ as she set up several build ups to possible goal scoring opportunities which were nullified by strong defence from the Bartica girls. They held on to prevent the Region 9 side from going ahead in the last 15 minutes as the home team seemed to run out of gas after their sustained attacking play for most of the exciting match.
The Bartica team were expected to depart by bus for home at 11:00hrs last evening and the organisers described the competition as a success for women’s football locally. (Sean Devers)
