Rangers SC of West Demerara thrashed their counterparts, United Brothers SC of Essequibo, by 66 runs to storm into the semi-finals, while their county mates, Wolf’s Warriors suffered a contrasting fate in their match against country wide champions Die Hard XI, losing by 65 runs at the Suddie Ground, Essequibo, Sunday morning last.
Rangers SC won the toss and defied overcast conditions to take first strike. Riaz Karim justified his captain’s decision, blasting 20 runs off the first over.
He then proceeded to brutalize the bowling, lashing sixes and fours to all parts of the ground. He was eventually dismissed in the eight over, three runs short of the century mark. His record total was recorded off just 48 balls that included nine massive sixes and five fours. During the onslaught, five balls were slashed out of the ground and had to be replaced.
Ameer Nizamuddeen supported with a swashbuckling knock of 28 while Safraz Karim contributed an even half century off 33 balls.
These sterling knocks helped the Rangers SC to compile a huge total of 216-7 when their 15 overs expired. Gopaul Deen took 3-40 off his three overs for United Brothers SC to take the bowling honours.
United Brothers SC started their reply on a positive note, posting 66 in 8 overs while losing 2 wickets. Their star batsman, Shannon Jagmohan compiled 46 off 26 balls before he was eventually dismissed. Gopaul Deen also contributed with the bat but departed soon after Jagmohan. He made 24.
Thereafter, the innings crumbled as the other batsmen failed to offer any resistance to Mohamed Saffie’s incisive spin bowling. This bowler finished with figures of 4-30 off 3 overs while Diaram Persaud and Bisham Persaud supported with 3-20 off 2 overs and 2-4 from 1 over, respectively.
In the second match, country wide champions, Die Hard XI defeated Wolf’s Warriors after the former team made 164-7 in 15 overs. .
Meanwhile, the two teams from Berbice, Heavenly Angels and # 68 All Stars booked their places in the finals by winning their quarter-finals and semi-finals matches, respectively.
In quarter-finals matches, Island Girls XI of Leguan and Uitvlugt Girls from West Demerara both were awarded walkovers after their opponents, Sunrise SC and Coomacka Girls failed to show for their encounter. Heavenly Angels also earned a walkover against Georgetown Girls while # 68 All Stars defeated Ruimzeight XI by 20 runs.
In semi-finals fixtures, Heavenly Angels defeated Island Girls by 17 runs while # 68 All Stars defeated Uitvlugt Girls by 29 runs.
Matches were also played in the U-15 category for the Kidicare trophy. In semi-final fixtures, Zeeburg Youths defeated Success XI by 6 wickets while Uitvlugt Youths defeated Triumph XI by 39 runs.
Meanwhile the semi-finals of the regular/open category will be held this Sunday November 7 at the Police Ground, Eve Leary. The finals, scheduled for Saturday November 21 would be contested under floodlights at the Bourda Ground. The following teams will battle for honours: Under-15 category for the Kidicare trophy, Uitvlugt Youths takes on Zeeburg Youths while in the female category for the Wellwoman trophy, Heavenly Angels tackle # 68 All Stars.
Fans would also be treated to an action packed encounter when Shattaville Masters opposes Trophy Stall Masters in the Regular / Open category for the Mike’s Pharmacy Trophy.
