A man who claimed to be a member of the Scrap Iron Association was remanded to prison Thursday on an allegation that he broke and entered a house and stole items worth $1.088M.
Gary Hartman, 36, of 58 William Street, Campbellville, was refused bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer a charge of break and enter and larceny.
It is alleged that between November 1, and November 2, at 56 William Street, Hartman broke and entered the dwelling house of Minerva Cort and stole one television, one tape, a dell computer, a quantity of books, a quantity of fairy lights, a quantity of children clothing, a BMX bicycle, ten cases of bottles, six carpets, a record player, ten pairs of shoes, one car battery and other items. Hartman, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, Cort who was present in court, said that the items stolen belong to her children’s father. She explained that on November 1 about 19:30 hours, she secured the building and went to bed. At about 02:30hrs the next morning she stated that she heard the dogs barking and she went to check the reason for such. She stated that she stays in the bottom flat of the building and when she went to check the upper flat she saw Hartman jumping through the window. “When he jump through the window he drop he hat,” Cort said.
Police prosecutor Kevin London objected to bail and stated that the facts of the prosecution are as Cort stated. He said that due to the information given, Hartman was arrested and charged the following day.
The magistrate in support of the prosecutor’s objection to bail refused to grant the accused bail. He is expected to return to court on November 23.
