A female member of the Guyana Defence Force was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday morning.
Private Tiffany December, 18, of Lot 7 Yarrow Dam, succumbed to massive head injuries after the vehicle in which she was traveling slammed into a concrete wall.
The accident occurred in the vicinity of the Conversation Tree on the Rupert Craig Highway around 04:00 hrs.
The driver of the vehicle, Kwame Ferrier, 30, of 282 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme sustained injuries to the chest, left hand and legs. Ferrier underwent emergency surgery and was critical up to press time.
The teen’s mother, Christine Francis, was inconsolable when this newspaper visited the family’s Yarrow Dam residence yesterday.
The woman said that her daughter came home last night to collect a few items from her bedroom.
“She come home and tell me that she come for some stuff because she got inspection, and then she went to the shop to buy some toiletry,” Francis said.
She further explained that she had warned her daughter to avoid coming out on the road late at nights.
The woman said that she received a telephone call from her daughter’s friend informing her about the accident. That was about 06:30 hrs.
“Tiffany friend call and tell me to check at the hospital because she heard that Tiffany was in an accident”.
She said she immediately rushed to the hospital, and saw the hospital porters wheeling her daughter’s lifeless body to the mortuary.
The mother said that she was told by her daughter’s friends that she had left Base Camp Ayanganna to drop off a cell phone.
She said that her daughter had promised to help rebuild the family’s home. The family lost an older brother a couple of months ago. December leaves to mourn her mother, father and her sister.
Relatives of Ferrier said that the young man had just left his girlfriend’s home in Melanie Damishana East Coast Demerara and was returning to Georgetown.
Ferrier’s relatives said that it still unclear how December was inside of the vehicle since they were not known to be familiar with each other.
A relative opined that December probably asked for a lift to the city because it was late in the night.
The relative further told this newspaper that Ferrier had related to other relatives that he had seen a bright light which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
“He just keep telling me that this bright light come in front of the window screen and he just lose control of the car”. Investigations are still ongoing into the accident.
