The Guyana Defence Force(GDF) is celebrating a month of activities that began with a church service, and will continue with a Veterans Day Observance on the second Friday in November.
There will be a talk and a luncheon, giving opportunities for ex members to socialise and meet with current serving members to have a transfer of knowledge and networking.
According to Lieutenant Colonel, Enoch Gaskin, the month continues with a competition that was sponsored by retired Colonel Carl Morgan, and is called the Carl Morgan Junior competition.
It is for non commission officers—for junior functionaries between the ranks of lance corporal and staff sergeant.
There will also be two significant dedications to the GDF – one, the jungle and amphibious training school in memory of a retired senior officer Colonel Robert Mitchell, one of the earliest officers to attend the jungle warfare training school in Brazil in the 1970s.
Then there is the commissioning of the coast guard base at Ruimveldt which will be dedicated to the memory of the late Captain Harry Hinds, the founder of the coast guard, “which is the maritime wing of the Guyana Defence Force.
In keeping with tradition the army normally names its bases after the exemplary functionaries that are deceased,” said Gaskin.
