This follows several resignations
Several of the executives that have been installed into office at the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has followed the cue of former President, Affeeze Khan and tendered their resignation with immediate effect. Following this new development, members of the interim committee have convened an Extraordinary General Meeting EGM), set for Monday November 9, to elect new office bearers.
Reports are that Vice President, Rudolph Torrington and Secretary, Otis Van Lewin, have followed Khan’s lead and dispatched letters of resignation to head of the interim body, Eustace Cuffy. Another Vice President, Keith French has reportedly signaled an intention to resign but to date has not officially done so.
Upon receipt of the letters, Mr. Cuffy convened a special meeting with other members of the interim committee to discuss the way forward. Following extensive discussions several of these members were supportive of new elections while a few, who reportedly are in the minority, wanted Cuffy to continue at the helm until the 2012 election of office bearers. Following heated discussions, a decision was taken to have new elections on Monday November 9.
According to our source, a few names have been bandied around for the top positions well as other executive posts but members are still to review these names in order to come up with the right persons who they believe have the ability to lead the beleaguered association forward.
Meanwhile, concerns have also risen in regards to the property of GABA, currently in the possession of former President, Affeeze Khan. The affiliates said that during his tenure as President, Khan had usurped the job of the secretary and had requested that all correspondence be sent to his home. He has now vacated office but the former president has refused to hand over the property of GABA to the interim committee.
The source further intimated that Khan had taken some of the equipment and other property to the offices of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA). However, one of the members of the interim committee revealed that the other members are not anxious to receive the property until proper checks are made to ensure that all of the items are included. “We have not touched them because they were not properly handed over,” the source revealed. He further said that the interim committee would be seeking the intervention of the President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) K. A. Juman Yassin to have the issue resolved.
Several other affiliates also attended the meeting including referees and judges as well as several other gym representatives including Wencel Thomas and Sebert Blake (FYF), Terrence Poole (GDF), Lennox Daniels (YA), Carl Graham (Republican) and James Walcott (HE).
