Forde, Morgan await confirmation for Panama
By Edison Jefford
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) have selected three distance athletes for two different overseas assignments next weekend, but one is based on confirmation from one of Guyana’s corporate giants while the other is definite.
The local athletics association named winner of the first two South American (SA) 10km Stages in Guyana and Suriname, Cleveland Forde and second place finisher in the female race, Alika Morgan for the Third Stage in Panama.
The AAG have also enlisted Lionel D’Andrade for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Half Marathon in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Both the SA 10km and Half Marathon are set for the following weekend.
Senior Vice-President of the AAG, Cornel Rose told Kaieteur Sport yesterday afternoon that the association is awaiting sponsorship confirmation from the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) for Forde and Morgan.
“We are still awaiting a word from GT&T for Forde and Morgan. We contacted them and they were supposed to call us back but they have not done so yet. I’m here at the Olympic House waiting all day (yesterday),” Rose indicated.
Forde and Morgan are two of the GT&T’s faces for sport. The two athletes have
appeared on bill boards and other advertising campaigns for the company and have supported them on overseas-based assignments in the past years.
“By Monday I should get a word from GT&T on whether they will sponsor the athlete for Panama,” Rose informed, adding that, conversely, all systems are in place for D’Andrade to attend the OECS Half Marathon in St Vincent.
D’Andrade had finished fourth in the SA First Stage here and third when he competed at the Second Stage in Suriname. He reportedly departed Guyana for Trinidad and Tobago, where he now trains and resides, earlier this week.
“We are putting the systems in place for D’Andrade. In fact, all we need now to make the final arrangements is his address in Trinidad. We decided to give him the chance because he is our best half marathon runner,” Rose informed.
The two overseas-based assignments for Guyana’s premier distance athletes should end a remarkable year in the Caribbean for them. Their successes ranged from the CARICOM 10km Road Race to the Antiguan Prime Minister’s race.
