The Director of Public Prosecutors has instructed the police to conduct further investigations into the alleged beating by police ranks of Bartica on robbery suspect, Cedric Babb.
A police statement said that the allegation was investigated and the file forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
“The DPP instructed that further investigations be conducted to clarify some issues which were identified and for the file to be returned for further legal advice upon completion,” the statement added.
Police released the statement in response to a Kaieteur News story in which 28-year-old Cedric Babb alleged that three ranks from the Bartica Police Station brutalised him while interrogating him about a stolen computer.
The Fourth Avenue, Bartica resident claimed that he was punched and struck in the stomach with a piece of wood while being interrogated in an office last week Thursday.
He also alleged that the ranks placed his head in a plastic bag until he lost consciousness.
Babb spent a day in the Bartica Hospital and he told Kaieteur News he was re-admitted last Wednesday for stomach pains.
Babb said he subsequently identified the three CID ranks while giving a statement to the officer in charge at the Bartica Police Station.
Babb, who said he is a carpenter, alleged that he was first questioned last week Tuesday by a police rank who accused him of buying a stolen computer.
After denying knowledge about the computer and refusing to sign a statement, Babb said he was placed in the lockups.
Two days later he was allegedly taken to a room which was occupied by three CID ranks. Under interrogation, Babb said he again denied buying the stolen computer.
Babb alleged that at that point, one of the policemen began to punch him in the stomach.
According to Babb, they covered his head with a plastic bag and kept it tied until he lost consciousness.
He claimed that the policemen revived him and they struck him in the stomach with a piece of wood.
The man claimed he was finally released after his father contacted the officer in charge at the station.
He was then taken to the Bartica Hospital, where he was admitted. Babb said he remained there until last Friday.
According to Babb, he was eventually released on $50,000 station.
