– Ezra Sue-Ho/ Shauna Gentle take Mixed Doubles
The cousins’ pair of Wayne and Clinton Alphonso claimed the Men’s 45 and over Doubles crown when they gained a walk over from Dr. Steve Surujbally and Maxie Fox in the finals last Thursday as play in this year’s Pegasus Open Tennis Championships continued, at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
In the Men’s 45 and over Singles Division, Rudy Grant defeated Harry Panday 6/2, 7/6 (7-3) in the tie-breaker to advance.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, while the Hotel was celebrating its 40th Anniversary in the Savannah Suite, out on the Courts the Open continued with marathon matches.
In what was expected to be another win for Grant in the Men’s 35 and over singles, Andre Lopes turned the match around in his favour using skills and consistency to send his opponent packing, beating him 6/4, 6/1 after two hours of play. Lopes outfoxed the usually consistent Grant, engaging him in long rallies from the baseline which created a number of unforced errors.
An impressive Dr. Surujbally and Fox stepped in once again for a second victory in the semi-finals of the Men’s Over 45 category. They defeated the pair of Victor Da Silva / Harry Panday 6/2, 5/7, 6/4 in a marathon three hours.
The Alphonsos’ scraped past Don Singh and Omar Persaud 6/2, 7/6 (7/5).
In what could be described as a very intense final of the Mix Doubles, Ezra Sue-Ho/ Shauna Gentle defeated Phillip Squires/Aruna Ramrattan 6/7 (4/7), 6/1 , 7/5
It was no easy win, as Squires/Ramrattan rallied for almost 3 hours, but the partnership of Sue-Ho/Gentle was once again too strong for them.
